The Medical Birth Registry of Norway (MBRN), or Medisinsk fødselsregister (MFR), collects information on pregnancies, births and maternal and child health. The Institute of Public Health is responsible for the register, which draws its data from compulsory reporting by maternity units of all pregnancies ending after 12 weeks gestation, including abortions after the 12th week. The purpose of the registry is to clarify the causes and consequences of health problems related to pregnancy and childbirth, as well as monitor the occurrence of congenital malformations. Standard statistics released include annual reports; institutional statistics designed to assist institutions in reviewing and improving their provision of antenatal, obstetric, and newborn care are available via a separate module in the statistics bank at http://statistikkbank.fhi.no/mfr. Data from the system are also available at http://mfr-nesstar.uib.no/mfr.
