Summary 

The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a primary source of information on the health of the population of the United States. The NHIS is a cross-sectional household interview survey that is fielded continuously throughout the year. The interviewed sample for the 2003 NHIS consisted of 35,921 households, yielding 92,148 persons in 36,537 families.

The 2003 NHIS covered a wide variety of topics, such as family composition, socio-demographic characteristics, injuries, health care access and utilization, health insurance, income and assets, health conditions, health behaviors, physical activity, and immunizations. The survey included supplement sections covering topics such as children's mental health, diabetes, asthma, cancer, and smoke/fire alarm use.
