Summary 

This cross-sectional study examined the causes of 551 neonatal deaths in Nepal. Data were collected with two instruments: a verbal autopsy questionnaire and a special questionnaire for birth asphyxia cases. Causes of death were determined by physician review. The survey was administered in six districts: Dolpa, Jumla, Palpa, Salyan, Chitwan and Morang. All of these areas have implemented the Community Based - Newborn Care Program (CB-NCP).
