Data were collected with a questionnaire and blood tests. Information was gathered about the PWID population regarding risk behaviors, demographic characteristics, population estimates, health literacy, health service use, and the prevalence of HIV, Hepatitis C, and other infections. The sample size consisted of 500 male and female Mauritius residents, over age 15, who had been injecting drugs at least three months. A respondent-driven sampling method (RDS) was used. The survey was conducted in Port Louis and and Curepipe.
