Summary

The Health and Nutrition Survey (HNS) examines the nutritional and health status of the Chinese population, and it collectes social, economic and demographic data. The survey uses a multi-stage, random cluster process and it involves 190 to 216 neighborhoods in 9 provinces. While not nationally representative, the provinces selected are chosen to provide significant variation in geography, health indicators, and economic development.  All surveys include a household interview, a health exam for children and adults, a nutrition survey, and a community survey. The health exams and household surveys took place in the participant's home, while community survey data came from interviews with neighborhood officials.

This longitudinal dataset combines data from all waves of the survey. Microdata on blood tests and birth histories were added in 2009.
